However, while the conversation often focuses on the platforms themselves, a different challenge is emerging:

During Fox Forum 07: Beyond the Drone – The Data Behind Autonomous Warfare, available on-demand here, we asked attendees from defense, government and industry about the opportunities and challenges shaping autonomous operations. Their responses highlight where many organizations are focusing their efforts today.  

Autonomous Systems Are Moving Beyond Experimentation 

Autonomous systems are no longer a future concept,  

with nearly 70% of respondents saying their organizations are already planning, testing or operationally deploying autonomous systems.  

This reflects a broader shift taking place across defense and government. Organizations are moving beyond evaluation of individual platforms and are now focused on integrating autonomous systems into operational environments where they can deliver meaningful mission outcomes.  

As autonomous systems become more connected, success depends on more than the platforms themselves. It depends on the information architecture that allows sensors, AI, command systems and operators to work together securely and at speed.  

Faster Sensor-to-Decision Times Are Becoming a Priority

One finding stood out above all others.  

86% respondents said reducing the time from sensor to decision is either critical or very important to successful autonomous operations.  

Mission success increasingly depends on how quickly trusted information can move from edge sensors to AI, command systems and decision-makers.  

The faster organizations can securely move mission-critical data, the faster they can detect threats, make informed decisions and coordinate operational effects. This is why mission speed is becoming one of the defining characteristics of modern defense operations.  

Security Remains One of the Biggest Challenges for Autonomous Systems 

As autonomous capability expands, so does the complexity of securing it.  

Almost 80% of respondents identified security as either a critical or significant challenge when rapidly fielding autonomous systems.  

For defense and government organizations, the challenge is no longer choosing between speed and security. Modern operations require both.  

Mission-critical information must move securely across security classifications, operational environments and coalition partners while maintain the trust, integrity and assurance required for high-consequence missions.  

This is why trusted information sharing and Cross Domain Solutions are becoming operational requirements, not simply cybersecurity capabilities.  

AI Is Only as Effective as the Data Behind It 

Artificial Intelligence is transforming how organizations analyze information and accelerate operational decisions. But AI can only generate trusted outcomes when it has access to trusted information.  

When asked where the greatest information bottlenecks exist, attendees most frequently identified AI and data processing.  

The challenge is not collecting more data, the challenge is ensuring AI receives information that is timely, accurate, trusted and available when decisions need to be made.  

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into defense operations, trusted mission data will become the foundation that enables AI to deliver faster, more confident recommendations.  

The Future of Autonomous Systems Depend on Trusted Mission Data 

The responses throughout the session consistently pointed toward the same conclusion. The challenge is no longer simply acquiring autonomous systems. It is securely connecting sensors, AI, command systems, operators and coalition partners into a trusted operational architecture capable of moving mission-critical information at mission speed.  

Ultimately, autonomous systems are only as effective as the trusted mission data flowing between them.
